SGS's 1998 loss narrower than originally forecast

SGS Societe Generale de Surveillance Holding AG posted a 289.7 million Swiss francs ($197.5 million) loss for the 1998 year. The company implemented a top management change in 1998. SGS predicted in December 1998 that it would post a loss of approximately 300 million francs. SGS posted 229.1 million francs in net profits in 1997. The company's net-cash position had fallen to 85 million francs by the end of 1998.

Cendant's earnings for first quarter beat expectations
