SHCIL PLANNING TO SET UP BANK, SEEKS RBI NOD

The Stock Holding Corporation of India Ltd (SHCIL) plans to set up a bank. For this, it has sought the approval of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The Stock Holding Corporation of India Ltd intends to enter securities related banking to exploit its core business. It has sought primary dealership to deal in government securities. The Stock Holding Corporation of India Ltd has already taken steps to make retail investors open depository accounts with it. In 1998, the Stock Holding Corporation of India Ltd raised its base to more than 20,000 investors. It also proposes to capture 75 percent of the market of 130,000 investors. (ag)

Ashok Leyland (AL), a maker of commercial vehicles, has forayed into the second-hand automobiles market. It has launched re- conditioned commercial vehicles. The re-conditioned Cargo trucks are being sold for Rs2.25-2.75 lakh each. It has already entered the Delhi and Maharashtra markets. This move of AL is expected to give it an opportunity to control the prices of used vehicles and increase the confidence of the motor finance companies. (ag)
