SHOWING AN IMPRESSIVE GROWTH PATTERN - INDIAN BULK DRUG INDUSTRY
Article Abstract:
The Indian bulk drug industry is experiencing a boom during the current decade. India, which was a bulk drug importer, has now turned into an exporter. The industry provides direct employment to 2 lakh employees and indirectly to another 2 lakh. The production is estimated at Rs3,500 crore and exports amounted to Rs1960 crore during 1997-98. The Indian pharma industry, which was introducing ten molecules a year, is now introducing 15 molecules. Since 1996-97, the prices of bulk drugs have dropped sharply owing to competition and fall in raw material costs. India's capabilities as exporter is attributed to Government's stipulation that formulation manufacture should involve bulk drugs manufacturing to an extent of 10 percent. Also the segment has an easy access to funding from capital market and many corporates are setting up plants for bulk drug manufacturing. The increased skills also resulted in industry expanding faster. However the industry is facing a ban on expansion of manufacturing facilities owing to environmental considerations. The industry feels expansion should be permitted subject to environmental conditions. (um)(psr)
