LEATHER INDUSTRY IN INDIA: GROWTH AND CHARACTERISTICS
Article Abstract:
India's export of leather and leather products have increased from Rs339.3 million in 1951-52 to Rs54622.78 million in 1997-98. The country's cattle population is ranked first globally with a share of almost 16 percent of world cattle at 194 million. Buffaloes have a global share of 56.5 percent at 70 million while goats have a global share of about 20 percent at 95 million. Small scale units account for 81 percent of the production of footwear and components, 94 percent in leather garments and 91 percent in leather goods. The country has about 1800 leather units operating at present and provides employment to about 1.4 million people. India has set a target to supply 10 percent of the global leather needs by 2000 AD from 3.5 percent now. (khr)
