SUGAR IMPORTS SQUEEZE DOMESTIC INDUSTRY
Article Abstract:
Free imports of cheaper sugar have adversely affected the domestic sugar industry as prices have fallen by about Rs700 per tonne in the last one month. The accumulated stocks of 7.5 million tonnes is expected to last till March 1999 and sugar mills are finding it difficult to get buyers in the market. A good sugarcane crop is expected to increase sugar output to about 15 million tin 1998-99. (khr)

IMPORTS HIT DOMESTIC SBR MAKERS HARD
Article Abstract:
Domestic manufacturers of styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) - Synthetics and Chemicals, Gujarat Apar Ltd and Apcotex Ltd - have been adversely affected in 1998-99 by cheaper imports. The total demand for SBR in 1997-98 was 55,200 tonnes of which 38 percent was met by imports. Domestic production of SBR is costlier by Rs5- 6 per kg than the imported variety. (khr)
