SUGAR OUTPUT COMFORTABLY CLOSE TO LAST YEAR'S LEVEL
Article Abstract:
Domestic sugar mills produced 121.95 lakh tonnes of sugar during October 1997-April 1998 (122.90 lakh tonnes during October 1996- April 1997), despite shortage of sugarcane available for crushing and severe liquidity crunch. In 1998-99, total production is estimated at 126 lakh tonnes (129 lakh tonnes in 1997-98). Of the total 130 sugar mills in the country, only 90 were operational during October 1997-April 1998. Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest production at 39.30 lakh tonnes (38.70 lakh tonnes), Maharashtra - 37.05 lakh tonne (34.40 lakh tonnes), Tamil Nadu - 8.5 lakh tonnes (8.45 lakh tonnes) and Andhra Pradesh - 7.7 lakh tonnes (7.6 lakh tonnes). Production declined to 8.35 lakh tonnes in Karnataka (8.37 lakh tonnes) and to 8.9 lakh tonnes in Gujarat (9.35 lakh tonnes). (gsh)

SUGAR ZONE
Article Abstract:
The sugar output from Maharashtra was 37.5-38 lakh tonnes in 1997-98 while the output for 1998-99 has been projected at about 48 lakh tonnes. This increase is because farmers are switching to sugarcane growing from cotton. With the de-zoning of the sugar industry coming into effect, non-members can sell their sugarcane produce to co-operative units outside the reserved areas while members of the co-operatives are also permitted to sell their excess produce to factories outside the reserved areas but after ensuring that the share quota requirements of factories inside the reserved areas is met.
