SUGAR PRICES EASE ON ADDITIONAL QUOTA RUMOURS

Sugar prices came down by about Rs100 on October 7, 1998 due to rumours that the government is planning to release an additional quota of 50,000 tonnes for the coming Diwali festival. The price of S-30 grade sugar was being quoted at Rs13,900-14,000 per tonne before the freesale quota for October-December was released and increased to Rs14,400-14,600 per tonne at the beginning of October 1998 when demand rose for the festival. ARECANUT PRICES UP 50 PERCENT IN SIX MONTHS

In Karnataka, arecanut prices have gone up by nearly 50 percent in the last six months, due to non-availability of adequate quantities. Price of the premium Sarakku variety has gone up to Rs20,000 per quintal against Rs13,000 to Rs14,000 per quintal in April. The price of the Bette variety is at Rs13,000 per quintal at present compared to Rs9,500 per quintal in May 1998. (gsh)
