It is forecast that the UK's non-terrestrial television market will rise from some 5.7 million households in 1996 to 6.8 million by end-1997. The most popular means of non-terrestrial reception is direct-to-home, accounting for 67% of the total market. The leading non-terrestrial broadcaster is British Sky Broadcasting, with 5.5 million subscribers and total revenues of 1.01 billion pounds sterling in the year to end-June 1996. Cable penetration has grown from 2.6% of the market in 1993 to nearly 8% in 1996. Satellite and cable penetration is set to rise by nearly 50% by 2001.

Around 3.9 million UK homes were estimated to be receiving cable or satellite television at the end of 1994. By the end of 1995, the figure is estimated to rise to 4.5 million. Satellite TV was used by 76% of all homes receiving non-terrestrial television in 1994, although cable is reporting stronger growth.
