The UK retail market for sanitary protection and feminine hygiene products was worth 223 million pounds sterling in 1993, against 204 million pounds sterling in 1992. The market for disposable paper products in 1993 totalled 1.6 billion pounds sterling, with sanpro accounting for 13.6% of the value. Sanitary towels accounted for 66% of retail sales during 1993, with tampons having a 34% share. The overall sanpro market is led by Tambrands' Tampax, with a 23% share by value, followed by Procter & Gamble's Always brand with a 14% share. The sanpro market is forecast to reach 276 million pounds sterling by 1998.

The French retail market for disposable nappies stands at around 4.5 billion French Francs, with unit sales standing at about 2.8 billion-3 billion per year. Disposable nappy output is stabilizing at around 165,000 tons per year. The birth rate is in decline which will affect market growth, with competition already fierce and consumers becoming increasingly price-aware. Ninety eight percent of mothers use disposable nappies. Spending on media advertising reached 151 million French Francs in 1994. The market is examined.
