Schroder thumped
Article Abstract:
German chancellor, Gerhard Schroder, has seen his Social Democrat party perform poorly in state elections in Sep 1999. Schroder faces a lessening chance of a majority in the Bundesrat, which he needs in order to pass tax reform laws. There are divisions within the Social Democrats themselves, and the defeat of Reinhard Klimmt from Saarland does aid Schroder in that Klimmt opposed the tax reforms. Schroders also needs to tackle unemployment, but here he should be helped by demographic factors.

Bodo Hombach, Germany's trouble-shooter
Article Abstract:
The head of the German federal chancellery, Bodo Hombach, was involved in an agreement to set up a fund for slave labor victims during the Nazi era. Hombach is a Social Democrat and argues that his party should modernise and could take lessons from the United Kingdom in areas such as tax reductions and job creation through labor market measures. Critics argues that he takes on too much, and that he is impatient when faced with paperwork, however, he appears to be happy when under pressure.

Schroder's Germany
Article Abstract:
The election victory of the German Social Democratic party means that Gerhard Schroder becomes chancellor, and he carries no memories of the 1939-1945 war. Schroder is more likely to press for German interests. Its is to be hoped that he will withstand pressures from within his party and from the Greens and he can threaten to seek aid from the Free Democrats and Christian Democrats. German links with countries other than France may also be strengthened.
