The institutional evolutionary party
Article Abstract:
The Party of the Institutional Revolution (PRI) has ruled in Mexico since 1929 and has adapted over time. An opposition is developing, and the PRI is changing to adapt to this challenge. President Ernesto Zedillo plans to use primaries to select the PRI presidential candidate. The National Action Party and the Party of the Democratic Revolution have considered a coalition, but there are major policy differences which would make this difficult. The PRI could perform better than expected, despite reports of its decline.

Can two become one
Article Abstract:
The Party of National Action (PAN) and the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) are the two main opposition parties in Mexico and they will need to cooperate if they are to defeat the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). There is a need for legal reforms to make it easier to set up a coalition government, and this has not been done, so cooperation between the two opposition parties is difficult. The parties should decide before Jul 1999 ends if cooperation is to be effective.

Coming of age in provincial Mexico
Article Abstract:
Elections in northern Mexico in Jul 1998 were seen as clean, though there are questions about campaign spending and the fees that the press sometimes seeks as payment for party news coverage. The Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) retained control of Durango state, regained Chihuaha, but lost Zacatecas. The National Action Party (PAN) lost Chihuaha, and this may be because the PRI allowed voters to choose a candidate, while the PAN chose an unimpressive candidate.
