Shell suits museum
Article Abstract:
Design team Edward Cullinan Architects and Buro Happold Consulting Engineers are working on a timber-framed design for a workshop at the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum of historic buildings in Sussex, England. The building, which looks set to go ahead after funding approval, will house an archive store and a workshop where the public can watch ongoing timber frame restoration work. The archive store will be in a concrete box which will be almost buried underground. The workshop above will have a double-curve, timber-grid shell roof which will overhang the sides of the building.

Next steps in timber
Article Abstract:
The increasing interest in timber as an environmentally friendly material may boost the use of timber as an engineering option within the UK building industry. In Scandinavia and North America, normal usage of timber has evolved into the engineered use of timber in commercial, industrial, recreational and educational applications. In such settings, timber is treated as a prime structural choice, just as steel, concrete and masonry are. In the UK, engineered timber may be more easily accepted in the non-domestic building sector.
