Sweden's banking industry is reeling from the news that two large banks, Svenska Handelsbank and Gota Group, posted disappointing earnings results for the first third of 1992. Swedish bankers hope to prevent the dramatic decline that decimated the banking industry in Norway in 1990-91.

Bad days at the banks

The property recession has had a major effect on bank profitability, as banks have been struggling to provide against property loan losses. Reserves are not adequate enough to do this, and profits may be being depleted for the next few years as a result.

Japan's banks count their capital
Article Abstract:
A shortage of capital is unlikely to lead to a lending squeeze by Japanese banks. Banks can expand their two-tiered resources if stock prices drop. Banks have a problem with core capital, as tier-one resources are only about 4% of assets.
