Section 11: Population
Article Abstract:
Population growth is measured by looking at numbers of births and deaths and by the numbers leaving one country to settle in another. The number of women who can bear children affects the figures, as do social factors like marriage and contraception. The UK death rate is higher than some EC countries and Japan. Deaths of children also come into the calculations. Figures for migration are obtained by measuring numbers of those entering a country to settle and also those who leave permanently.

Merger activity in the British bus industry
Article Abstract:
There are a number of reasons for the extensive merger activity which has been seen in the UK bus industry since it was deregulated. A takeover or merger is a key route to external growth, but this is becoming more difficult as a growing number of planned deals are referred to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission. Bus companies are merging to create economies of scale, to form a monopoly, to achieve growth or to spread risks.

The structure of the British bus industry
Article Abstract:
Deregulation has prompted many changes in the UK bus industry over the last decade. Many small operators have been created, especially through management and employee buy-outs. This initially made the sector very fragmented, but this has changed recently as consolidation has taken place. At present, large operators control around 58% of the market, and mergers are still taking place.
