Seeds of a coffee revival. Local brews: I
Article Abstract:
In the 19th century, Batangas was one of the largest producers of coffee in the world. In the 1880s, a devastating bout of leaf rust all but wiped out production. Today, coffee growing is a money-loosing prospect in the region. About a third of the plantations are gone. Low coffee prices have prevented the region from recovering, and mean that only about 10 percent of the country?s production is exported. Farmers, roasters, local politicians, and business people have recently banded together to turn around the industry.
