Servisair goes on spending spree

Servisair, an independent ground handling company based in Europe, has bought a total of 471 items of GSE equipment, which will be deployed at 20 stations during 1998. The purchases were worth $8.2 million. An official says the new equipment are needed to perform fresh and current contracts, as well as the company's activities at the new Gardermoen Airport in Oslo, Norway. The official says they are constantly being asked to limit aircraft ground times and expenses, while keeping the highest levels of operational safety and protection for the environment.

BAA to invest $10bn in London

UK airport operator BAA PLC has completed a revised 10-year capital investment plan, which calls for yearly average expenditures of 600 million pounds sterling ($900 million) on the south-east airports. Implementation of the investment program depends on BAA's forthcoming regulatory review, which will examine new airport charges for five years, starting 2003. BAA is also asking airlines and other interested parties to provide feedback on its investment proposals.

Ground handling firm Swissport has installed the Guard Black security system from ICS in 60 vehicles, including cars, small vans, minibuses, trucks, aircraft pushback tractors and pallet handling conveyors. The Guard Black Box provides information on driver and vehicle movements and incorporates non-contact proximity card readers. Other data provided by Guard Black Box include vehicle acceleration, speed, engine revs and idling time.
