Shares without the other bit
Article Abstract:
Stock dividends have become less common in the US, where they are paid by only 20% of companies, compared to 90% during the 1950s. Fewer companies make profits than before, and this is espectially true for internet companies. Stockholders are taxed on dividends, and can defer this tax by foregoing dividends. Stock buybacks have provided payouts, however, and to some extent they have replaced dividends. Dividends appear to have become less relevant as a way of assessing stock prices.
