Sharp-eyed Apache
Article Abstract:
The US Army will install Comanche-based targetting and night pilotage systems to its Longbow Apaches to expand the attack helicopters' fighting and night-flying capability. The upgrade for the Apaches will be in the form of a B-kit that includes SADA I-based second-generation thermal imagers. The upgrade will also involve a competition for FLIR technologies, allowing the service to assess the greatest possible commonality while addressing issues pertaining to performance, cost, schedule and risk. The upgrade was spurred by the need to eliminate the limitation in the Apaches, particularly the incapability to distinguish friendlies from hostile targets, as well as the discomforts experienced by pilots with the aircraft's night-vision sensors.
