Shedding light on Megawati
Article Abstract:
Megawati Sukarnoputri is the daughter of Sukarno, the first president of Indonesia, and the treatment of Megawato is part of political theater in Indonesia. She is the only major political figure in Indonesia apart from President Suharto, and has been removed from the chairmanship of the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI). The government has helped boost her popularity by creating a symbol for opponents of the regime. The ruling party is likely to achieve a majority vote, and Suharto looks set to be the only nominee for president in 1998.

Family and friends
Article Abstract:
Indonesia's President Suharto has appointed a new cabinet which includes Siti Hardijanti Rukmana, his eldest daughter, and Mohamad Hasan, a close friend. Suharto is moving away from the appointment of technocrats in favor of appointing family and friends. Hasan's appointment has been criticized as an example of cronyism, but he is also seen as able to achieve results. There are some divisions within the cabinet, and relations between Suharto's daughter and Vice-President B.J. Habibie are said to be poor.

Political engineering
Article Abstract:
Indonesia's government continues its efforts to marginalize opposition leader Megawati Sukarnoputri despite increasing signs of unrest and hints of dissent within the administration and the military. Police and demonstrators clashed over the congress of a government-backed splinter group of the Indonesian Democratic Party, one of only three authorized political parties. Ironically, the government arranged the appointment of Suryadi as new chairman of the party, despite having ousted him in 1993.
