Shipping deal cheers Fujian, but details harbor trouble
Article Abstract:
The economy of the Fujian province in China is being stimulated by the new direct shipping links agreement between China and Taiwan. The province has two ports that can provide links to Taiwan through the Taiwan Straight. Local officials foresee THe province's economic future as being started by the tourism industry, which hopefully will be followed by investments in the manufacturing and industrial sectors. Investments in Fujian started with the building construction of the Formosa Plastics Group and China Motors Corp. Long-delayed building and hotel constructions are being revived again in the province in anticipation of the influx of tourists.

Desperation drives a deal
Article Abstract:
Taiwan signed an agreement that will enable the country to store about 200,000 barrels of low-level radioactive waste in North Korea, a deal estimated to be worth $227 mil. The deal will benefit both countries which are described to be Asian outcasts. The money paid by Taiwan will aid North Korea's present economic weakness, while Taiwan will be able to boost its friendly ties with other nations. South Korea, however, has stressed its objection regarding the deal, which it says is more of a political interest rather than a consideration for safety.

Infrastructure firms elicit new investor doubts
Article Abstract:
China's crackdown on illegal foreign-exchange dealings to protect the country's currency from Asia's economic woes may discourage new investment in companies that build highways, power plants and bridges in China. The government crackdown rendered the so-called guaranteed returns of the infrastructure companies a lot less unstable. Hence, the companies' share prices may suffer.
