Shoot for the moon: Malaysia's Star Publications heads for listing
Article Abstract:
The daily tabloid The Star has posted substantial profits for the past five years in Malaysia. The Star has become Malaysia's leading English-language daily. After it was shut down for six months by the government in 1987, the paper has put more emphasis on business than politics, a change which appears to have served it well. However, the paper is susceptible to a takeover, and it needs to find more revenue sources. Newspaper stock will begin trading on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange, and the Star will be listed.

Stop the presses: Hong Kong English-language daily goes under
Article Abstract:
The Oriental Press Group closed down its money-losing English-language daily, the Eastern Express, on June 29, 1996, over two years after its launch and seven weeks into an attempted reinvention. At the same time the group's hands-on chairman, Ma Ching-kwan, stepped down, perhaps taking the blame for the Express's demise and the expensive and failed price war he launched in the Chinese-language newspaper market. The closure costs Hong Kong a voice that had vowed to remain independent despite China's takeover.

Extra! Extra! Price war rattles Hong Kong's newspapers
Article Abstract:
The entry of Jimmy Lai's Apple Daily into the Hong Kong newspaper market in Jun 1995 has undermined the tradition of cooperation between newspaper families regarding pricing. The Apple Daily significantly undercut the other papers' prices and gained the second highest circulation. The other newspapers have responded with drastic price cuts, from HK$5 to HK$2, which may damage their long term stability because of increased newsprint prices and the older newspapers being the core business of the families.
