Shudders from Asia
Article Abstract:
The economic crisis in Asia has had a number of effects on the US, such as fewer Asians at Las Vegas baccarat tables, and plant closures due to lower Asan demand for circuit boards and other products. The US has seen a rise in investment and employment, and there are shortages of skilled labor, but some US states depend heavily on Asian markets for their exports, and they include Oregon and California. The drop in Asian demand affects a range of products including minerals and fruit as well as high-tech products, so economic diversity does not offer protection.

Boom, what boom?
Article Abstract:
South Korea should be able to boost its exports following devaluation, but automobile exports have dropped in volume terms. Devaluation initially affects receipts and takes some time to boost exports, and South Korea is also affected by the economic problems of other countries in the region which has depressed demand there. Smaller companies also have problems in obtaining credit. Industries that import raw materials find that they are more expensive when a devaluation occurs. Shipbuilding is the one industry that has seen a boom in exports.

An unfinished revolution
Article Abstract:
The Brazilian private sector has reformed more rapidly than the public sector, and trade liberalization enforced change whic has often involved foreign investment. The car industry has modernized and increased sales. Export volumes have been hampered by exchange rates, but this should change with the devaluation of the Brazilian real. Protectionism in rich countries creates obstacles for Brazilian exporters, costing some $6 billion annually in exports lost, according to Brazilian officials.
