By appointment only: nominated MPs spark speculation on motives
Article Abstract:
The appointment to Singapore's parliament of six additional Members of Parliament (MPs) by the People's Action Party has created a stir in the political scene. It is speculated that the move by the ruling party is intended to counter any poll victory that the opposition groups may score in the by-elections slated before Mar 1993. The nominated MPs are a mix of respectable and independent-minded figures from different fields. Among them are senior law lecturer Walter Woon of the National University of Singapore andKanwaljit Soin, a woman orthopedic surgeon.

Promises to keep: by-election test for premier and fractured opposition
Article Abstract:
Singaporean Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong has decided to go ahead with a by-election that would test his party's strength as well as that of the opposition. Goh had earlier promised the political exercise before the general elections of Mar 1993. Some political analysts have cautioned Goh about proceeding with the exercise because of the unnecessary risk involved in terms of his political career and that of his moderate policies which have differed from his predecessor's strongman rule.
