Exports helped Japan's economy expand the last four quarters (from April 3, 2003) despite the presence of swooning stock prices and persistent deflation. February 2003 marks the nation's 11th straight year of export growth, in terms of both volume and value.

While the Japanese government has generously given $118 million in 2002 to help refugees, it has only allowed 309 refugees to settle in the country. By contrast, the U.S. admitted 37,400 refugees.

The increasing positive signs of Japanese economic recovery are examined. Though the growth is export based, the domestic consumer spending has risen to 5.6% in 2003.
