Singapore's soldier-scholars march into leadership
Article Abstract:
The Singapore military is not especially known for political activity and it has in fact tended to avoid politics since the island-nation's independence. However, observers have noted the ruling People's Action Party's seeming preference for foreign-educated Singapore Armed Forces officers when filling up key government positions. Some quarters have expressed concern that the increasing numbers of former soldiers in the civil government could lead to a military mindset which would dominate all government policies.
