Singing their own song
Article Abstract:
Opera performances are held at country houses in England, and seats are sold well in advance. Country house opera has been more successful than conventional opera for a number of reasons. Commercial sponsorship has been easier to attract, and private donors can be offered priority booking. Costs are lower at country houses, which hire an orchestra from elsewhere. Glyndbourne built an opera house in the early 1990s recession, when builders and other craftsmen were cheap, having raised funds in the previous boom. Individual promoters also have a major impact.

Only fools and horses
Article Abstract:
The Royal Opera House faces financial and other problems. A TV documentary on the Opera House showed internal divisions and problems with productions Funding from both the private and public sectors has shrunk. There are different boards, committee and councils, each with their own agenda and power base, so a common voice is difficult to achieve. Meanwhile, the reason for having an international house, and the art itself, are issues that tend to be neglected.
