Sins of the fathers: Filipinos sue US over plight of Amerasian children
Article Abstract:
A class-action lawsuit in behalf of 8,600 Amerasian children in the Philippines was started against the US Defense Dept on Mar 4, 1993. The plaintiffs claim that the US government should provide the children with $60 million in support because they were sired by American military personnel who had sex with Filipino prostitutes in Olongapo, the Philippines near former US military bases. Led by Crotchett, Illston and Pitre, a California law firm, the plaintiffs assert that the US Navy deliberately encouraged prostitution in Olongapo to provide recreation for American servicemen.

Himalayan headlines: Bhutan's only newspaper helps usher in change
Article Abstract:
Bhutan's sole newspaper serves a conservative society but finds that the change it brings is also reflected in new demands from its readership. Freed in 1992 from government control, the 12-page 'Kuensel' is published weekly in English, Nepali, and Dzongkha. It addresses both local and international issues, though social resistance to criticism sometimes limits its reporting more than any government pressure. Editor-in-chief Kinley Dorji has brought the paper far from its government-bulleting origins in eight years.
