Argentina's next steps
Article Abstract:
The new president of Argentina is likely to be Dernando de la Rua, who head the opposition Alliance Party, and he is likely to be better able to tackle reform of the police force and judiciary than was Carlos Menem, his likely predecessor. De la Rua also represents continuity to some extent, in that he has promised that the country's economic strategy will continue, in contrast to Eduardo Duhalde, a candidate who had sought more government spending. De la Rua faces a major task of reforming privatized monopolies, labor union privileges, federalism and the tax system, if he is elected, and he deserves good luck.

Argentina's Mr Boring plods to victory by default
Article Abstract:
Argentina's presidential elections could be won by Fernando de la Rua from the Alliance, though initially it appeared that the Justicialist, Eduardo Duhalde, would win. De La Rua has benefited from problems faced by Duhalde, including lack of support from some senior Justicialists. De La Rua will face a number of challenges if he is elected, including decisions on Argentina's currency link with the US dollar, and on debt servicing. The Alliance already plans fiscal discipline, and de La Rua has shown his ability to achieve this as mayor of Buenos Aires.

Now for the poor: Argentina
Article Abstract:
Argentine Pres Carlos Menem has called for greatly increased aid to the poor. Critics contend he is trying to win support for a constitutional amendment that would allow him to run for re-election in 1995. He deserves credit for bringing inflation under control.
