Sister courage
Article Abstract:
Hazara women are beginning to play an active role in opposition to the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. There are 12 women members of the central council of the Wahadat, the main Hazara political and military organization, and there is a separate women's committee involved in providing health care, family planning and literacy services. Women have been instrumental in establishing a university in Bamian, one of only two co-educational universities now operating in Afghanistan. Aid workers report that there are very high literacy rates among Hazara women.

Humanitarian disaster
Article Abstract:
The fourth year of post-communist civil war in Afghanistan has inflicted a terrible human toll on the citizens of the capital city of Kabul. One diplomatic source reported that tens of thousands of people could starve to death in winter if Western efforts for peace negotiations and humanitarian relief do not improve. Most people in Afghanistan suffer from chronic malnutrition and are vulnerable to disease. The situation may get worse because the United Nations is running out of money to fund its relief efforts in the country.

No way out: Afghan women battle to survive
Article Abstract:
Women in Kabul, Afghanistan, could face serious restrictions if the Taliban capture the city. Women face little discrimination in Kabul, but would have to wear a veil if the Taliban invaded. Different warlords have their own rules on women's conduct, and some will not allow women physicians to practise on women. Women have already suffered from malnutrition and being unable to provide for their children. Teenage boys may seek to survive by going into the army and are often used in the front line.
