Slipping standards; furore over interview highlights problems with TV shows
Article Abstract:
The disclosure that Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS) withheld the fact that it had conducted a television interview with a lawyer who was later murdered by the Aum Shinrikyo cult has prompted widespread criticism in Japan. The lawyer, Tsutsumi Sakamoto, his wife and baby son were murdered by the cult one week after TBS conducted its interview. TBS never aired the interview but did show it to members of the cult according to court testimony. Public criticism directed at TBS for the incident is seen as a result of competitive pressures that has television broadcasters blurring the distinction between entertainment and news.
