The United Kingdom government plans to privatize the London Underground. Private sector transportation companies will be invited to bid for three separate contracts. The privatization programme will not use public money and will be completed by the year 2,000, according to paymaster general Geoffrey Robinson. The railways construction company London & Continental Railways has been awarded another two months to complete proposals for the Channel Tunnel Rail Link programme.

Adviser to study Thai rail privatization options
Article Abstract:
An advisor who will study the planned restructuring and privatization of the State Railway of Thailand, and make recommendations, is being sought by the Thai government. The study, which will be funded by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, will look at the development of organizational options, as well as the future role of Thailand's rail system. Recommendations will include an implementation plan and needed managerial tools.

Sale of UK ROSCOs raises $4 billion
Article Abstract:
Three passenger rolling stock leasing companies (ROSCOs) were sold for 1.8 billion pounds sterling, a price that reflects confidence in the future of rail privatisation in the UK. Eversholt and Porterbrook were purchased by MEBO groups. There is potential for competition between the ROSCOs, particularly in the area of new-build stock.
