Spanish elections of Mar 2000 follow a period when Spain has made progress following its emergence from the rule of General Franco. Spain made progress in the 1980s under the Socialists and Felipe Gonzalez, and this has continued under the People's Party and Jose Maria Aznar. Aznar has secured social peace and liberalization. and unemployment has dropped during his rule. He still faces problems in tackling Basque separatism, but he has generally been successful.

New Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar had to do a great deal of political maneuvering with other rightist factions to assemble a stable government. Numerous economic problems plague the country, however, and Aznar seems to lack the will to tackle them forcefully.
