Smoke signals
Article Abstract:
The European Central Bank (ECB) is likely to watch a number of key indicators. These are the broad money supply in the euro area, output, consumer-price inflation and the exchange rate. These indicators suggest that there is a strong argument in favour of the ECB reducing interest rates to stop economic growth and inflation falling too low. However, ECB Governor Wim Duisenberg has emphasized that the bank will be more willing to cut interest rates if governments retain tight control over their budgets and workers do not make excessive pay demands.

Euro-go-go: the single currency
Article Abstract:
Plans to decide on conversion rates and membership in the Single European Currency are set for May 1998. This seems to assure that all the mechanisms will be in place before the scheduled start date of Jan 1, 1997. This expediency means that some countries, including the UK, may be left out of the first round of membership.

Ways toward EMU
Article Abstract:
Several European nations are preparing for a transition to a single European currency, but the notion remains unpopular among voters in the UK and continental Europe. To succeed, the backers of the EMU concept must design an economically sound system that ordinary Europeans can support.
