Snail-paced consolidation
Article Abstract:
Consolidation is occurring in the banking industry in Japan, France and Germany, with major mergers being carried out in all three countries. Fuji Bank, Dai-Ichi Kangyo Bank and Industrial Bank of Japan plan a merger, while Germany's Bresdner and Deutsche banks are considering joining their retail operations. Banque Nationale de Paris aims to retain a stake in Societe Generale which could bring effective control. These projects are still likely to result in national champions, and there are few global retail banks. There is space for further consolidation in the banking industry.
