Solving the generalized assignment problem using polyhedral results
Article Abstract:
Two heuristics developed were able to yield almost optimal solutions to the Generalised Asignment Problem. Implementation on a set of 60 representative and highly capacitated problems revealed the ability of the two heuristics in generating solutions that are 0.06% less than the optimum. Usage of bounds generated from the two heuristics, with the help of some pre-processing strategies, was found to be useful in generating solutions within acceptable computing time.

An experiment in scheduling and planning of non-structured jobs: lessons learned from artificial intelligence and operational research toolbox
Article Abstract:
A knowledge-based decision support system called Task Oriented Planner (TOP) was developed to solve a non-structural scheduling problem (NSSP), the scheduling of aircraft turnaround function. The TOP, which employs both artificial intelligence and operational research techniques, demonstrate that the conversion of NSSP problems to their structured equivalents enable flexibility and knowledge replication at different abstraction levels.
