Speaking out for business
Article Abstract:
European industrialists and employers have picked themselves the right person to speak on their behalf when they chose Zygmunt Tyszkiewics to be the new general secretary of the Union of Industrial and Employers Confederations of Europe (UNICE) in 1985. Tyszkiewicz embodies a true European, being born in Poland, raised partly in Sweden and partly in England where he obtained his education and his polished veneer of English culture, and has worked across Europe. To top it all, he is married to a Swede and then later acquired an Italian son-in-law. Aside from Tyszkiewicz's cosmopolitan culture, his dynamism as a leader makes him an asset to the UNICE. Much of the general secretary's time is spent building consensus among UNICE members. Tyszkiewicz realizes that forming a united front is the only way that European businesses can make themselves be heard by the EC.
