Bleak prospects
Article Abstract:
Mikhail Gorbachev's policies to introduce free markets into the Soviet Union as an engine for economic reform face bleak prospects because of a lack of historical experience with capitalism and cultural mores rooted in the communalism of Russian life. The social and economic system under the last of the Romanov czars is similar to the one Gorbachev has inherited from his predecessors in which: people are guaranteed a low but secure standard of living; initiative is discouraged; and a communal egalitarianism is the norm. The Soviet Union will have difficulty going through a phase of primitive capitalist accumulation because cultural norms do not accept the inequalities inherent in a market economy. Also, capitalist entrepreneurs historically have been considered illegitimate.

Business prospects in Ukraine
Article Abstract:
Ukraine is the third largest of the former Soviet Union countries, with a population of around 52 million. The country has huge commercial potential, with sea access through the warm water Black Sea ports, productive agricultural land and a variety of industries. However, it has failed to attract susbtantial numbers of Western investors who are discouraged by uncertainties over future energy supplies, high inflation and the slow pace of privatisation.

Prospects for Shuaiba IPP project dim
Article Abstract:
There are doubts about whether the planned Shuaiba project by Saudi Arabia will be the first independent power plant in the country. Bids are being considered from five international consortia to build the first phase of a build-operate-own (BOO) steam-powered plant. However the government may have to opt for a turn-key project, due to increased electricity demand.
