Under siege: pressure grows for Bhutto's resignation
Article Abstract:
A rally organized by the Pakistani fundamentalist group Jamaat-e-Islami at the end of October 1996 aimed to force the resignation of prime minister Benazir Bhutto. However, the leaders of the rally were arrested, as were many supporters. Bhutto's government is again being accused of corruption and incompetence, charges similar to those made during Bhutto's first period of government in 1990. However, this time she has lost the support of her former ally, president Farooq Leghari, who could be preparing to dismiss her.
