Spirits in France
Article Abstract:
Total consumption of spirits and liqueurs in France in 1998 was an estimated 1.53 million hl pure alcohol, equivalent to 2.4 lt per year per head. Aniseed-based drinks accounted for 36% of the total, with whisky, vodka and gin at 22%. Consumption of rum, cognac, calvados and wine-based aperitifs has declined substantially, but consumption of other spirits, including vodka, gin and whisky, has risen dramatically. The market should continue to grow at a moderate rate as long as excise duties and other taxes remain at a similar level.
