Patina of success
Article Abstract:
Foggo Associates undertook the project to design a speculative office building in the City of London, England, for developers Heron Property Corporation. The main contractor on the project was Sir Robert McAlpine. The building does not look out of place with nearby Victorian buildings yet offers very modern facilities. Foggo Associates were able to keep the design within parameters set by the planning authorities yet also keep to the budget dictated by the development company. The building has been designed to house more than one occupier if necessary.

Peckham rise
Article Abstract:
Peckham Library in London, England, designed by Will Alsop, features coloured illumination to make it visible at night. It is also highly visible during the day because of its patinated copper cladding. It has an arcade at ground level, making it part of a network of pedestrian routes. Users enter what seems to be a long, thin building, but the space inside proves to be almost square. At mezzanine level in the reading room, there are three circular forms resting on tripods. The central one houses the library's Afro-Caribbean literature collection, while the other two provide a meeting room and a children's space.

Split personality
Article Abstract:
Ryder Architects has been responsible for a custom-built steel frame building on the Balliol Business Park in Newcastle, England, for Novocastra Laboratories, which develops and produces reagents for biochemical research. The great height and dramatic angle of the glazed roof of the building's internal street give the building an atmosphere of spaciousness, an impression enhanced by the avoidance of closed-off cellular spaces. The laboratory element of the building is constructed from cylindrical steel columns and universal beams.
