On line for new business
Article Abstract:
Information technology (IT) has evolved from many independent elements into an integrated system which combines all the IT requirements to run a business or a facility, such as an airport. With IT having become the backbone of many modern airport operations, many airports have become more savvy in the use of management information systems and operational databases. Many software vendors have developed airport operational databases, which have become standard at many airports worldwide.

Spotlight on ground safety
Article Abstract:
Airports throughout the US, Europe and the world are conducting continuous research into surface movement and guidance systems. One such research agency involved in ground safety programmes is the UK's Defense Evaluation and Research Establishment (DERA). Its objective is to prove that new technologies improve efficiency and lessen congestion within and outside airports. DERA is a member of a consortium headed by Navia Aviation that is tasked with developing advanced surface guidance solutions.

US ups security spending
Article Abstract:
The Threat Image Projection (TIP) x-ray technology would get a significant portion of the $259 million appropriated by the FAA for airport security. The TIP is a training aid that projects digital images of weapons including explosive devices at random to airport personnel to test their ability to detect these objects. On the other hand, the FAA is spending a mere $89 million on computed tomography-based explosive detection systems, specifically 60 units of the eXaminer 3DX 6000.
