Sri Lanka wants peace, perhaps
Article Abstract:
The election campaign in Sri Lanka for the Dec 1999 presidential elections involve Chandrika Kumaratunga, the existing president from the People's Alliance, and Ranil Wickremesinghe from the United National Party. Both candidates see the need to end a conflict involving Tamil separatists, though there would be problems in deciding on the fate of non-Tamil minorities if some devolution is carried out. The war has affected the economy in a number of ways, including discouraging foreign investment, and has also allowed the postponement of difficult economic decisions.
