The Congress Party in India is hoping for a comeback and many see Sonia Gandhi, widow of assassinated former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, as their saviour. Congress only polled 30% of the vote in the 1996 general election, but it is now emphasizing the fact that it has consistently fought against communal and divisive forces in the country, and that coalition governments can only be stop-gaps.
