Stalling in China
Article Abstract:
Daimler-Benz is scaling down its projects in China. The company planned to invest $800 million to produce Family Car China, and signed a letter of intent in 1995 for a $1.8 billion investment to produce Mercedes-Benz minivans. Daimler-Benz Aerospace (Dasa) also joined a consortium to produce an aircraft, the Asia Express. The company reported a loss in 1995 and decided to aim for a minimum 12% return on capital. Returns of any kind are not easy to achieve in the Chinese domestic car market. The Chinese government is using a local partner for the project, so Daimler-Benz does not have to withdraw. The minivan project has not been discussed, and the Chinese are reconsidering the aircraft venture.

Can GM and the unions take each other on trust?
Article Abstract:
General Motors, the largest car manufacturer in the world, has managed to put an end to a two-month shutdown, but it is still not at all certain that the company's relations with the United Auto Workers' union will be more positive in the future. The settlement of this dispute has not really produced any clear resolutions, and there will still be significant tests of relations with the United Auto Workers' union in the period to mid-1999. The most important test will be the new national deal due to be negotiated in 1999.
