Rocking the boat: militant union shakes up Korea Inc
Article Abstract:
The radical Korea Confederation of Trade Unions has finally grown too big to ignore, and it is making demands that place S Korean President Kim Young Sam in a bind. The KCTU, which the govt refuses to recognize and whose leaders it routinely arrests, counts among its members some 1/3 of the country's 1.65 million organized workers, with the 40,000-strong Korea Telecom union about to join. The KCTU wants a 14.8% pay hike at the annual wage-settlement talks now starting, and the right to back parties in the Apr 11 elections.

Article Abstract:
South Korea's need for accurate information about North Korea is particularly acute as Kim Jong Il prepares to take on the presidency in North Korea in Sep 1998. Particular attention will be given to whether Kim Jong Il will implement the necessary reforms to revive North Korea's economy. A considerable number of South Koreans are involved in monitoring developments in North Korea, but results have been mixed. Exports explosion
Article Abstract:
South Korea's economy has been booming, due in large part to a surge in merchandise exports and capital investment. South Korea exceeded $100 billion in exports in Oct 1995. An annual growth of 9.2% is expected for 1995, a substantial increase over 8.4% in 1994. South Korea is moving to capital-intensive production and away from labor-based industries. Imports of capital goods have decreased. In Aug 1995, unemployment was at 1.9%.
