Stateless in Shangri-la
Article Abstract:
Violence in Bhutan over an influx of ethnic Nepalese has driven many to refugee camps in Nepal. Advocates for the refugees say ethnic cleansing is to blame, and plan to go before an international body against racial discrimination in Aug 1996. Spokesmen for Bhutan's government say they simply want to maintain their independence and claim to be equivalent to an endangered species. They point to the fate of the kingdom of Sikkim, where ethnic Nepalese became a majority, overthrew the government, and joined India.

Article Abstract:
Mom Luang Tridhosyuth Devakul tries to marry traditional styles with modern materials and techniques in the buildings he designs in Bangkok and elsewhere in Thailand. The US-trained architect, called Mom Tri for short, designed the Australian embassy on Sathorn Rd, the UN's Escap building on Ratchadamnoen Ave, the Rama IX park, and the Bhirasri Institute of Modern Art. Chief among his passions is the Mae Nam Chao Phraya, a heavily polluted river that used to be the main avenue for the city.
