Stay of execution for duty free sales
Article Abstract:
The operations of duty free sales have been extended in the EU due to pressure from France, Germany and the UK. While the decision to scrap duty free sales was made seven years ago by EU finance ministers, there are concerns that the closure of the duty free shops scheduled for July 1999 would result in considerable job losses and possible air fare increases. Duty free revenues is one of major sources of funding for capacity improvements for European airports.

Time is running out for duty-free
Article Abstract:
A European Commission (EC) report said there should be no extension to the Jun 30, 1999, deadline for the phase out of duty free shops. The report said the abolition will result in about 53,000 job losses, but noted that these losses are only of short duration and will redound to a greater benefit in the long run. Both the Airports Council International and the International Duty-Free Confederation have been urging for a five-year transition period.
