Steel in the frame: a round-up of recent developments in steel's fire and environmental performance, steel construction systems and composite panels
Article Abstract:
British Steel believes that current design standards for fire protection of steel frames are unnecessarily conservative. The BRE is undertaking tests on a steel frame building to determine how little fire protection steel frames can survive with. At a recent national steel conference it was suggested that improved sprinkler systems would prove a better investment than improving passive fire protection. Design guidance is required within three years to justify less protection for steel.

Promoting combined services: environmental design increasingly brings architects and services engineers together. CIBSE's conference reflects this growing dialogue
Article Abstract:
Developing environmental ideas and promising work in progress were highlighted at the CIBSE conference. These include the BRE work to develop an energy rating scheme for non-domestic buildings and a project on the use of passive solar techniques in building refurbishment. Renewables projects include the use of photovoltaic electricity for small power loads and fan power on cooling plant. There is also work being undertaken on a CIBSE guide to mixed-mode ventilation systems.

Energy shaping the city
Article Abstract:
The fourth European Solar Energy in Architecture and Urban Planning Conference in Berlin in 1996 focused on issues including the urban scale and larger buildings. The conference also discussed new energy technologies, including solar-powered refrigeration using desiccant cooling; new high-performance glazing; thermotropic glazing; and developments in light-directing glazing.
