Stepwise decomposition approaches for large scale cell formation problems

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to characterize a couple of stepwise decomposition methods for solving large scale industrial cell formation problems. The first method supported the repeated use of Benders algorithm to solve large subsystems resulting from the original system while the other utilized a heuristic algorithm to carry out the decomposition process. Results showed that the decomposition techniques supported optimal solutions for various cell formation problems.

Robustness of capacity rationing policies

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the impact of forecast errors in the demand distribution parameters on the performance of the proposed rationing (BSP) policy. The BSP policy permits make-to-order manufacturing firms encountering expected total demand of available capacity to discriminate between two classes of products. Results indicate a selective rejection of orders for the class having lower unit contribution.

A cell formation algorithm: hypergraph approximation - cut tree

Article Abstract:

A search algorithm operating on the approximated graph was developed during an attempt to solve a hypergraph partitioning problem. The algorithm, which is made much flexible to gain an extensive range of cell formation alternative through alteration in size limits, can be easily coded given a standard maximum flow code that is linked. Moreover, its low time complexity allows it to be used in real life situations.
