Still in command: big government will come to terms with the global economy
Article Abstract:
The increasing mobility of capital and labor is not diminishing the power of governments to tax and spend. Governments are taxing immobile parts of production more than mobile areas and are shifting the overall balance of taxation more heavily on workers. Effects on macroeconomic policy are also discussed.

Beyond the welfare state: smaller government need not hurt the weak
Article Abstract:
Countries with relatively small governments tend to have low unemployment and a high standard of living, but pockets of poverty. Countries with large governments usually have higher unemployment but less poverty. Proposals on how governments can promote balance and equity are examined.
